The majority of my dolls are from the Japanese brand, Volks
- starting in 1999, Volks was the earliest company to make modern BJDs
from polyurethane resin and started the BJD hobby. Originally selling
dolls as kits with a view to customers customising the dolls and making
them unique, Volks has gone from a company with one standard model (the
Four Sisters doll; Kira, Nana, Sara and Megu were dolls with the same
face and body, but different face-ups, eyes and wigs according to which
'sister' you bought) to many popular standards in different sizes, huge
numbers of limited editions and a 'Full Choice System' where customers
can pick the headsculpt, skintone, body, hands, feet, face-up, eyes and
wig to create their very own BJD exactly how they want it.
As
the hobby has grown over the past 10 years, more and more companies
have started producing dolls, wigs, eyes, clothes, furniture and
accessories. While I have a preference for Volks and I'm not actively
looking for any more dolls, I like looking at BJDs from Alchemic Labo,
Elfdoll, Fairyland, Iplehouse, Little Monica, Luts, Musedoll, Souldoll
and SWITCH.
